Joey’s Story
Last year, we supported Joey via the StandOut Helpline service as he prepared to leave HMP Wandsworth. Almost a year later, we caught up with Joey to find out what prison was like during the pandemic and how StandOut supported him to navigate the challenges since being released.
How were you feeling in the weeks before you were released from prison?
Really anxious to be honest, not knowing if I was going to be able to find a job or have somewhere to stay. I was worried and depressed. But StandOut was the charity that helped me the most during my first days after release. I thought StandOut would be able to help with a CV and work needs, but I didn’t think they would help with accommodation, homelessness and things like that. It’s been a game-changer.
And how did you hear about StandOut?
It was a really weird time being in prison during the pandemic because we couldn’t really see many people for support. But StandOut came to my cell door a few times to talk to me about my situation and plans after prison. They told me about their Helpline service that could help me after I got out of prison as well as before. It was great to speak to someone face-to-face.
Tell me a bit about what StandOut has done to support you.
When I was still in prison, they helped me to write a wicked CV and talked me through my job options because I was determined to get my life back on track.
When I came out, my housing was up in the air and the council didn’t know if they would be able to give me somewhere. I was homeless for a little while so I contacted StandOut and they were able to help me access emergency accommodation while I waited for somewhere longer-term to stay. Now I’m back in the flat I was in before I went to prison, but I am so grateful for the help I got from StandOut during that time.
After I had found my feet, StandOut referred me to do a CSCS course. Because of their help I’ve been able to secure work installing ventilation with a big company. While I wait for that to start, StandOut also supported me through getting my motorcycle licence which will let me be a bit more independent and open up more work opportunities.
It’s all about the connections you have, and not many people coming out of prison have the right contacts. So having someone there that can take that first bit of anxiety away and hook you up with the right people and build that relationship for you, that’s perfect. I’ve also had to do things myself and reach out when I needed support, but then StandOut gave me the resources that I needed to move things forward. They have gone above and beyond to help me move on from prison.
What would you say to someone who’s about to be released from prison?
Keep in contact with StandOut. A lot of people come out and they don’t have relationships and think they’re on their own and stay solitary. But keep the positive energy going. When people get anxious, they want to shut the world off, but there are people like the StandOut team who are genuine and want to help you. You just need to take the first step yourself and call them. What they’ve done for me so far is great, and I’m looking forward to keeping working with them in the future.
